Wrath of the Lich King: 70-75

Well, this is awkward.  I had that great post about how fun it is to just play World of Warcraft one night a week and escape the addiction.  But like any good junkie, I’ve got my USB keyboard plugged straight into my profunda brachii and I’m sure I can quit any time I want to.  Right?

Seriously, though, the Wrath of the Lich King expansion is very well-designed.  In the original game content, and in the first expansion (The Burning Crusade), areas were huge and I spent half my time riding between quest objectives.  This expansion changes all that.  Each zone is huge, but it has little quest hubs all over, and each has quests in the general area.  Occasionally, (the Dragonblight zone comes to mind), the quest hubs are in an inconvenient place.  But in general, the areas are very well-constructed.  They also put flight points everywhere you want to be.  Read on.

I don’t want to suggest it’s all been hugs and murlocs.  Having just hit level 75, I can say I’ve been finding the zones progressively more annoying.  But they seem to peak about 2/3 of the way through them, and then the annoyance calms and I start to enjoy the zone again.  And then I move on to the next one and think “Why is this zone so annoying?”  I had that problem all the way through The Burning Crusade.  I hope it subsides.

races_nightelvesThe character I play is a Night Elf Rogue.  I chose this race because it has a stealth bonus and because it moves faster while dead.  And I used to spend a lot of time dead.  But because I prefer solo play with my Rogue, my spec is Combat.  They’ve improved the Rogue’s ability to fight multiple things and I basically stock up on food to keep me healed.  So I don’t spend much time dead anymore.  At least, not unless I’ve just run off a cliff again.  But hey, two more levels until I can fly around Northrend rather than walking.

I guess if you’re reading this, you want my opinion on whether or not to go out and buy the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.  I can say this for sure: It’s the best thing Blizzard has done so far.  If you like World of Warcraft, you will /love this expansion.  Jason told me, “It’s the expansion The Burning Crusade should have been.”  However, and this is key, if you have pulled the USB plug from your veins already, do not under any circumstances purchase this.  I’m serious.  You will never escape.  It’s just too good.
